  • Ice Cave

    by Alex Buisse aka. nattfodd

Mathis Dumas, one of the top French ice climbers, on the steep walls of a tunnel inside Mer de Glace, a prominent glacier in Chamonix, France. It is extremely uncommon to climb overhanging ice like this (apart from glaciers, the only other kind is spray ice, as in Helmcken Falls, Canada), and climbers usually only scale frozen waterfalls or alpine gullies, which are at most vertical.

    by Henry Stolz aka. megal0man1a

Two figures stand near the peak of a sand dune in China's Gobi Desert following a two-day storm. The nearby town of Dunhuang, situated in China's western Gansu Province, had not received rain for more than eight months prior. In the distance stretches a faintly visible fence erected by the government intended, but not successful in, preventing passage onto the dunes. Beyond the fence lies an ancestral burial ground that spans back countless generations.

  • The Wave

    by Cory Marshall aka. marshacl

I was fortunate in my last trip to Southern Utah and Northern Arizona to win the lottery for the famous Wave formation in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. I hiked out to the Wave a few hours before sunrise and explored for the whole day, waiting for the light to be perfect. This formation is one of the most unique locations i have ever been to. The water in the pool was just icing on the cake. I waited until about 20 minutes after sunset to eliminate the harsh shadows and captured the amazing leading lines and reflection of this impressive formation.

    Peaks from Lake Manapouri

    by Nick Depree aka. the_ace

A winter road trip with my friend ended up at Lake Manapouri, in the South Island of New Zealand, where we were rewarded by clearing clounds and a view through to the adjacent mountain ranges. The weather can move fast in NZ, and some times it's worth waiting around an hour to see what will happen next.

    Fisherman In The Fog

    by Cory Marr aka. cmarr

A foggy fall morning in southern Missouri near Table Rock Lake Dam provides the perfect location for any fly fisherman. The fog rolled in as soon as I got to the dam which gave the entire area a very eerie feeling. The fog was so thick at some points, I couldn't actually see the fisherman in the water. After deciding to head back due to the fog, I saw this fisherman sitting on a foldable chair in the water. As soon as I noticed him, I instantly put down the Hasselblad and the tripod, composed my shot and hoped that he wouldn't move. Thankfully he didn't.

    Preserve

    by Cody James aka. codyphoto

Taken in the jungles of Borneo, this image depicts a loving female Orangutan mother with her infant baby Orangutan (male) This beautiful species is fighting a continuous losing battle against deforestation via palm plantations and outright hunting/destruction as they're viewed as an invasive species to the farmers of these plantations. The Orangutans are losing ground daily, and sadly at this point, unless the Indonesian government takes a stance, they will be lost in the wild forever. In my short few days experiencing the wonderful Orangutans their mannerisms were strikingly human, the curiosity, frustration, humor, anger, and other emotions they portrayed were truly remarkable.

    Minor Prize Winners!

The top 80 will be recieving reddit gold! I want to build nice widget to display the full list here but it has to be custom built because there's nothing in bootstrap for that yet... I also don't want to delay this announcement any longer. So I'm leaving this lame message here. Expect it within the week ahead. I'll sticky it on /r/photography when it's ready. Message me on twitter if I'm being too slow with this.

    About

This is the 4th photography competition from the /r/photography community

    • Best of 2012!

      Our Humble Beginnings

On /r/photography we spend a lot of time talking about which camera to buy. Eventually, we decided to get an amazon affiliate link, since we were posting a bunch of amazon links anyway.

In our first year we collected a whole $200! So that is what we were able to put up as a prize. Unfortunately the way we asked for licenses in this first competition, we promsied to delete the photos after the end of the comp, so although you can browse showcase thread here, the photo links are all dead.

    • WideAngle app contest

      /r/photography starts attracting sponsors

After the Best of 2012 competition, we were contacted by a small startup who gave /r/photography two iPads to give away in return for trying out and giving feedback on their iPad app. The results of this contest can be found here. In adition to the main prizes, 3 years of reddit gold was split amongst the top 20 places.

    • Best of 2013!

      Exponential Growth!

For the best of /r/photography 2013, ThinkTank, Backblaze and Keh joined the party to provide a bunch of cool prizes for the winners. We ended up giving away $500 in gift vouchers, 3 camera bags, 3 years of cloud backup and 3 years worth of reddit gold split among the top 20 places. The showcase thread can be found here.

    reddit

If you don't know what reddit is...
I'm afraid you're disqualified from this competition.

reddit is an entertainment, social networking service and news website where registered community members can submit content, such as text posts or direct links. Registered users can then vote submissions "up" or "down" to organize the posts and determine their position on the site's pages. Content entries are organized by areas of interest called "subreddits".

Please note that this competition is being run by the /r/photography moderators who are NOT employees of reddit. Being a moderator is an unofficial volunteer position. The moderators have admin approval to run this competition. The admins are providing one prize and some of the reddit gold.

    This year's Prizes!

We're giving away over $6000 worth of stuff this year!
(Even more if you include the shipping and convert to Australian dollars!)

    Description Image

With 7 sponsors this year, we have enough prizes to give out 3 different classes of prizes.

Similarly to how previous competitions have been run, all photographs will be ranked using upvotes. However this year, when you submit your photograph, you will also declare one of the categories that our generous sponsors have provided prizes for!

    Grand Prizes

The Grand Prizes will go to the top 3 overall photographs in the competition.

    First Prize

  • The top photograph will be printed and displayed at reddit's headquarters until it is replaced by another artwork from a similar competition (within a year). The print will then be mailed to you to keep!

  • A $500 B&H Voucher, provided by the /r/photography slush fund!

  • A Metal Print from SmugMug! (Or a print of equal value, $200)

  • reddit gold from the /r/photography slush fund!

  • Second Prize

  • A $250 B&H Voucher, provided by the /r/photography slush fund!

  • A Metal Print from SmugMug! (Or a print of equal value, $200)

  • reddit gold from the /r/photography slush fund!

  • Third Prize

  • A $100 B&H Voucher, provided by the /r/photography slush fund!

  • A Metal Print from SmugMug! (Or a print of equal value, $200)

  • reddit gold from the /r/photography slush fund!

  • Major Prizes

4 Sponsors have each sponsored 4 different categories this year. If your photo is the highest ranking photo in it's category, you get first choice of a prize from that prize pool. Second place gets second choice, and third place gets the remaining prize.

  • All Major Prize winners will receive a one year SmugMug Portfolio account and a SmugMug care package.
  • All Major Prize winners will receive reddit gold.
  • The top ranking photographer from each category will also recieve one year of cloud backup from Backblaze.
  • Note that since /r/photography is an international forum, the Sponsors have generously agreed to include international shipping for all prizes. Previous winners have come from all around the world and redditors are well known for international shenanigans... but please try to keep shipping requests reasonable. We have reserved the right to ask for another address if you specify something like "The International Space Station".

    Minor Prizes

The top 80 ranked photos will recieve reddit gold.

    non-prizes: photobook & gallery

I am not calling this a prize, because there is no absolutely no gaurentee that it will happen, but the top 80 ranked photos (Minor Prize Winners) will be considered for the /r/photography photobook.

I am very sorry about failing to deliver on the photo book last year. The biggest issue was that I did not initially ask for a print-ready size when initially collecting the photographs, and after the competition, I did not have enough free time to email 80 people to ask for photographs and descriptions. It is too easy to put off volunteer work with "no deadline". In retrospect I should have delegated the task to others much earlier and allowed other people to help us.

This year, to solve these problems, we are collecting higher resolution photographs, thanks to SmugMug, we can take photogaphs up to 50 megabytes. If the Mod Team doesn't have a book out by the start of May, we will invite other redditors to take over the project on /r/metaphotography

Similarly, the 12 Major Prize winners (top 3 from 4 categores) might be used in a travelling photo gallery, we're just asking for the appropriate licenses to do this, but we're not promising that we will be able to fulfil this promise.

If the gallery looks possible by the time the book is ready, the book will be sold for profit and the money will be used for the gallery expenses. Otherwise the book will most likely be published through Blurb at zero profit.
